Something every house needs…. How frustrating is it to search the house for a pair of tweezers for a splinter or even a bandage. Everything seems to end up in random draws or cabinets, when you are hurt or injured you want what you need and you want it now! I needed something I could keep all our first aid equipment in that would be organized, as I searched everywhere from CVS to The Container store and everywhere in-between. I still couldn’t find what I was looking for. Then it came to me, a Tackle Box!! A good old fashion fishing tackle box would be the perfect size and easy to store! I went right away to Target and purchased my tackle box… I then went right into the medical section and purchased everything from smash ice packs that don’t need to be kept in the freezer to emergency tooth ache medicine. You never know what could happen and when bad things do they always seem to happen at a late hour. No one wants to head out to CVS at midnight for a toothache or minor wound. I’m so Excited for my first aid kit, Ralph always laughs when he comes home and sees me organizing it! Here are some pictures of our “Homemade” make shift first aid kit!!

What you will need:    (I fit all of this and then some!)
·  first-aid manual
·  sterile gauze pads of different sizes
·  adhesive tape
·  adhesive bandages in several sizes
·  elastic bandage
·  a splint
·  antiseptic wipes
·  soap (I bought a travel purel)
·  antibiotic ointment
·  antiseptic solution (like hydrogen peroxide)
·  hydrocortisone cream (1%)
·  acetaminophen and ibuprofen
·  extra prescription medications (such as Dramamine because I cannot go on a boat or ride without it!!)
·  tweezers
·  sharp scissors
·  safety pins
·  disposable instant cold packs
·  calamine lotion
·  alcohol wipes or ethyl alcohol
·  thermometer
·  plastic non-latex gloves (at least 2 pairs)
· mini flashlight and extra batteries I also put a mini magnifying glass because sometime you cant even see the splinter!)
·  mouthpiece for administering CPR (can be obtained from your local Red Cross or Milford Hospital will give you one)
·  Also print out how to do cpr and tape it to the back of the inside of your first aid kit….You Never know when you are going to need it.

I have added lots of other little things that I always seem to need and can never find such as Airborne and even a tide to go stick. I have some medicine in the first aid kit but I’m now working on our Home Medicine Kit so I’m sure everything will be organized according to need.

I recently joined Top Baby Blogs...as we are expecting our First BABY!!! I would SOOOOO Appreciate if you would take two seconds to vote for me! I promise its that quick, just TWO clicks! Click HERE than click the owl to the Left! :) :) :) THANK YOU for being so Rockin' Awesome, Hope you all enjoy your Summer...and your Tackle Box First Aid Kits :)  **Top baby Blogs is a site for Mommy blog's that all come together**

Where did you get the small containers of meds to fit? That seems to be my biggest problem.

Sarah with an h said...

I actually have another plastic bucket for meds. In the first aid kit I do have some meds like Advil and stuff but I went to the travel section of target and bought the mini versions so that they are little and will fit. One idea...put the meds in a labeled plastic Baggie :) or in the bottom of the first aid kit where there are no compartments. Hope that helps :)

Thank you Michael :) I think organizing it was the funniest part! :)

Meds: Try one of those flat plastic medicine sorters. They are available in several sizes, some of the large ones may even have removeable rows. These are easily relabeled for your specific needs. I keep a small one in my purse and labeled it for "ibrupropen, aleve, tylenol,..." in case I get a headache. Would be good also for those that take sinus meds from time to time. If you don't think the lids are going to stay tight enough for your purposes, just wrap a rubber band around the rows.

Hi!! I am making a travel kit for our camping trip and the tackle box is perfect and will fit under the front seat! I also made one just for my kids out of a cute polka dotted travel make up box. It has teething med, gas relief, diaper ointment, emergency formula, mini shampoo, bath wash, powder, etc... I cant tell you how many times I have had to use it in 9 years!!! As they get older, my collection of band-aids and children's meds evolves! Congrats on your new baby! Enjoy every minute!! Tree :)

P.S. I use altoid boxes for the kids personal ones...a couple band aids, antiseptic toweletts, hand sanitizer. They get to decorate them and keep them in their back packs or pockets as we adventure!! I suppose you could use them for anything! The smalls are adorable little tins that hold my ibuprofen!

How much did all of the supplies to go into the kit cost you? I'd like to do this as a high school graduation gift for my sister to take to her dorm and am wondering what the up front cost is!
